- DESCRIPTION
-
-
- Data or Application archiver. Stores files in compressed
- form on diskettes for easy later retrieval. For those with
- too many programs or too much data to fit on their drive.
- Alternative to buying a bigger hard drive. Allows you to
- easily compress your files and move them to floppy disks and
- later easily restore them. Great for laptops, file servers,
- or desktop computers with small hard drives.
-
-
-
- FEATURES
-
-
- This program has the following features:
-
- o The size of you hard disk will no longer limit the
- number of programs or amount of data you can use.
- Instead, you can use floppy disks for storage and
- yet still have your files available for use.
-
- o Your important programs and data can be stored on
- floppy disks out of harms way, safe from viruses and
- other destructive agents.
-
- o Information is packed onto disks using all available
- space on each disk.
-
- o DiskBase calls external compression programs and
- takes advantage of the latest in compression
- technology.
-
- o By allowing you to keep old copies of archives,
- DiskBase serves as a useful "backup" solution.
-
- o DiskBase is very easy to use.
-
-
- UPGRADING OLD VERSIONS
-
- 1) Create a directory called something like DSKBS2.
-
- 2) Copy all the files in the distribution package to this
- new directory.
-
- 3) Copy the old catalog files, *.DBF and *.DBT, from your
- old program directory to the new directory.
-
- 4) IF you used a catalog name different from the default
- name, DB, modify DISKBASE.CFG to use your old catalog.
- You will still have to create individual .CFG files if
- you want to maintain more than one catalog, or if you
- want to use more than a one drive for storing your
- archives.
-
- QUICK INSTALLATION
-
-
- 1) Be sure your archive program (PKZIP, or ARJ, etc.) is in
- your PATH. (Refer to your DOS manual for more
- information about your PATH.)
-
- 2) Create a directory for DiskBase and copy all of its
- files to it. (OPTIONAL: DiskBase will find all of its
- files in this directory is added to your PATH
- statement.)
-
- 3) Start DiskBase, by typing DISKBASE at the DOS prompt.
-
- 4) Choose the "Archive" main menu item and select the
- directory you wish to archive. By selecting a
- directory (pressing Enter), all files in that directory
- and all directories below it are moved into an archive
- and copied to your storage drive. If you want to just
- create a COPY of the directory, rather than MOVING it
- into an archive, select the directory with Ctrl-Enter,
- instead.
-
- 5) Once you have created an archive on your storage drive,
- you can select the CATALOG option from the main menu to
- view a tabular list of your stored archive(s). While
- viewing the list, you can re-install the archive, view
- the archive, or remove old archives from your
- collection.

-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
-
- IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible with 430K of memory, MGA,
- CGA video (or better) and DOS 3.2 or later. A file
- compression program (like PKZIP or ARJ) that can take the
- required command line arguments, and reconstruct paths.
- Mouse optional.
-
-
- REVISIONS
-
-
- 1.0
-
- Initial release.
-
- 1.1
-
- Number of small fixes.
-
- 1.2
-
- Added prompt to prepare disks before installing multiple
- disk archive.
-
- Changed prompt when removing a disk from collection to be
- more noticeable.
-
- 1.3
-
- Fixed loosing databases after archiving a dir.
-
- Fixed potential problem restoring video mode.
-
- Fixed problem displaying dir tree in proper order.
-
- Added ability to archive a drive from the root directory
- below.
-
- Fixed recursive help.
-
- 1.4
-
- No really. This time we really did fix problem loosing
- databases.
-
- Restored ability to edit database. You shouldn't need to,
- but ...
-
- Added ability to set DSKBSCFG environment variable to
- define configuration file.
-
- Changed the error message when users chooses to view the
- catalog when it does not exist. It should be easier now
- for the first-time user to figure out how to get started.
-
- Fixed estimation of disk space used by files in
- directories chosen with subdirectories.
-
- 1.41
-
- Fixed formatting problem in documentation.
-
- Added message when can't find data in SPACE menu option.
-
- Changed the documentation to better explain how disks are
- numbered and how to re-install an archive.
-
- Included batch file to list contents of either ZIP or ARJ
- archives.
-
- Included both ARJ and ZIP example CFG files, and goARJ.bat
- and goZIP.bat example start-up batch files.
-
- 1.42
-
- Fixed problem with PKZ204C and DiskBase's inability to set
- volume label.
-
- Updated documentation to reflect use with new PKZIP
- version 204C.
-
- For MULTIPLE DISK ARCHIVES, DiskBase will always use the
- next highest disk number from your collection and will no
- longer fill in gaps in disk numbers. Also, do not use
- disks FROM YOUR COLLECTION with PKZIP version 2 or later
- when using the & (multiple disk archive) option. PKZIP
- will overwrite the disk label on each of the disks you use
- and mess up the database. Always use blank disks instead.
- DiskBase only fills in gaps in your collection if you use
- a configuration file that specifies F(alse) in the
- "Multiple Disk Capability" option.
-
- Added gozip2.bat for new version of PKZIP.
-
- Removed Space main menu option. It is no longer need
- because filling disks is under program control, and a
- comprehensive report is available under the Catalog main
- menu option.
-
- Added Remove main menu option to remove references to a
- disk from the database that is no longer a part of the
- collection.
-
- Added key file system to encourage registrations.
-
- Changed default archive program to PKZIP. Use GOARJ.BAT
- to install or view old ARJ archives in your collection.
-
- 2.00
-
- Added the ability to use more than one archive program,
- and more than one compression setup for any single
- compression program. All batch files other than GO.BAT
- dropped.
-
- Added ability to create an archive without removing the
- old directory. Useful for just backing up your installed
- software.
-
- Added the ability to choose the Application/Data drive at
- runtime rather than having to go through configuration
- options.
-
- Fixed failure to create new database in first time use
- when using a non Multiple Disk Archive compression method.
-
- Fixed possibility that an old archive could be overwritten
- by a new archive of the same name when the old archive
- existed on THE disk with just enough free space on it.
-
- Removed OPTIONS menu item. Configuration items can be
- changed using an ASCII text editor by modifying the
- current .CFG file.
-
- Added check for existence of data/application directory
- before re-installing archive. However, this check is only
- effective if you archive directories with no extension in
- the directory name.
